GP Training in Victoria

The Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program is a specialty training program. The program is managed by General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET) and delivered by a national network of regional training providers (RTPs).

In Victoria, the AGPT program is delivered by 4 RTPs:

  • Bogong GP Training
  • Beyond Medical Education
  • Southern GP Training
  • VMA GP Training

The 4 RTPs are also providers of the Prevocational General Practice Placements Program (PGPPP).

About us

The 4 Regional Training Providers of AGPT work collaboratively with the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) to promote general practice throughout Victoria.

The consortium was established in 2005 with the focus to inform doctors and medical students about their career options and in particular how to become a GP.

Since forming, GP Training in Victoria has participated in over 250 events and has provided information to over 5000 doctors and students.

Rural Workforce Agency, Victoria

The Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) works collaboratively with the Victorian Regional Training Providers promoting general practice in rural Victoria and assisting GP registrars to find rewarding general practice placements once Fellowship is obtained.

RWAV provide ongoing support services to doctors and their families.

Going Places Network

GP Training in Victoria and the Going Places Network work in partnership in promoting general practice in Victorian hospitals. The Going Places Network focusses on providing peer-to-peer support and information to doctors in a hospital environment to foster greater awareness and uptake of general practice as a career choice. GP Ambassadors are volunteers who are working in Victorian hospitals and who act as a contact point for their peers and run networking events. A list of GP Ambassadors is available on the GP Australia website.

Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation

Victorian RTPs work in partnership with VACCHO to increase the GP Training capacity in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in Victoria.

Australian Medical Association (Victoria)

We work collaboratively with AMA Victoria promoting General Practice as a career to Victorian junior doctors. We are involved in various career events together and cross promote each organisations activities and events focussing on career options, in particular General Practice.
